Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina

Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina are obligate intra-erythrocytic tick-borne protozoans causing bovine piroplasmosis. Cattle who survive the initial fever, anemia and icterus become lifelong carriers. Detection of this carrier state is also of major economic importance. Substrate Slides are prepared with infected bovine erythrocytes, where the merozoites are visible as compact inclusions by IFA staining.
